Evie Toombes Update

“Wow – The last couple of weeks have been a whirlwind!

A few days at Scope Showjumping Festival with the wonderful Milton who jumped a great clear in the para warm up on grass and I got to meet up with Georgina from Global Herbs. She was a great help and helped me get a warm up which was proving difficult because many of the able-bodied riders wanted to use the same ring. We did have a steward on the gate but he was needed elsewhere so it was useful to have Georgina to step in. The problem is many of the para disabilities aren’t visible so people struggle to understand what issues we are struggling with and how it can affect safety.

The following day it was fantastic to have a great introduction for each para rider in the main ring explaining each ones story, plus it may encourage others to join up that weren’t aware. Milton loved the class and we finished 4th in the Senior Grade III with a fast jump off and an unfortunate fence down. I think Milton prefers a twistier track where she has to think more. It was still a great result though for my first summer in Seniors, as I’m only 14 but now ride a horse.

I’ve had a great couple of months with the para shows claiming two fourths and a win at Hartpury. It’s been incredible to get some results in British Showjumping able-bodied classes as well, like at Stoneleigh where I finished 3rd, and to top things off I actually won the British Showjumping 1m open at Willow Banks on Sunday!!!! This was beyond my dreams for this year.

I have so many plans for the next few weeks and am determined to qualify for some able-bodied National Championships. Plus I’ll be allowed to do a bit more on the four year old Apple who was so well behaved at Willow Banks. My health is still being a problem but the horses help me find a way to carry on enjoying life and really keep me going – I know I’m lucky :)”
