“Totally unlike me I was being very organised about Portugal. I was dying to leave on Sunday morning, so I took the whole lot showjumping on the Friday, Monday and Tuesday before. We have 19 at home at the moment, 13 of which I’m riding, so obviously that takes up my day. I was packing a little each evening, haylage was in, partitions were moved to make room for four horses travelling for two long days, wheelbarrow and feed in the back, etc. I received a phone call on the Thursday from the lovely Sarah (who has taken over XC schooling at Larkhill from the marvellous Bryan Elliot, who does all my transport!) to tell me that Larkhill was open on Saturday and Sunday. Arrggghhhhh! I looked at Ma and she looked at me, and we both conceded that I needed to go as it was the only place where the ground would be top notch.
So I unpack my lorry and take the first 7 horses, 5 in mine and 2 in the little lorry. All the horses went like a dream, and although it was windy, the rain held off. I returned home for a quick swap and then took the last 5. All brilliant ponies, I’m pretty chuffed with them all, but also pretty tired.
We got home, did evening stables, moved the partitions again, loaded the lorry, went food shopping and tried to go to bed ready for the 1.30am alarm… Well none of us could sleep so we ended up having a midnight feast and watching The Voice!
We made it to Portugal with no hiccups, a miracle in itself. The stables are lovely, we ordered big ones as my boys are all over 17hh. The weather is warm but a little wet. We are all settled in, ready for a great competition. It’s great to see all my foreign friends and I’m looking forward to this weekend. I will keep you posted xx”
