“Phew, the end of another hectic weekend! This week signalled dental check ups on all 5 horses with just a little routine rasping required, followed by an Osteopath visit to ensure Beau and Dougal are firing on all cylinders.
The weekend was a busy one, Saturday an early start to attend the NCPA Kelsall Hill Showing Festival. Bailey was up first in the Blue Chip 4, 5 and 6 year old ridden sports horse class. He was incredibly grown up about it, having unloaded off the lorry into a 50 acres lush grassy field to then going into a show ring and walk, trot and cantering around the jumps with other horses. He didn’t put a foot wrong to take 3rd, highest placed 4 year old, to qualify for the final at the National hunter show. Had a long break then so trundled off to the other end of Kelsall to walk the cross country courses for the following day, must be a mile from end to end of Kelsall!
It was then Dougal’s turn in the BSPA coloured plaited Royal International qualifier class, foot perfect as always and gave a dream ride we were unfortunate to be placed 3rd, just missing our ticket to the RIHS. But I don’t suppose many of those show horses were then coming back the following day for eventing! Home for a quick turnaround, reloading the lorry and sort the horses for a return trip to Kelsall on Sunday. Beau was up first in the BE100, our final prep run before Badminton and very grateful to get a run after all the abandoned events due to the Great British Weather. Sadly Sunday’s weather was bitterly cold and windy which although did not affect my wonder ponies one bit it did give me an impressive headache all day! Beau did an obedient but lack lustre test for 28 (followed unfortunately by Sam Ecroyd who got 16.1!!!) then a fabulous double clear to pick up 8th. He breezed the XC which has given me confidence in his fitness, even with an impressive headwind!
On to Dougal in the Open Novice, he is very consistent in his dressage but I let him down a little for 32, I still blame the wind which was trying to push us off course! He then also jumped a foot perfect double clear, with just 1.6 time penalties (which is fast for us!). I knew we were in a section full of pro’s but I was thrilled to discover we came 4th, just behind Ruth Edge and Nicola Wilson, this also means we have qualified to go back to the Festival of British Eventing at Gatcombe to contest the Corinthian Cup.
A very tiring weekend but super pleased with my boys!”
