Pure Seaweed is a great source of trace minerals that are lacking in pasture forage and concentrates. Our seaweed is grown in the North Atlantic in the Western Isles of Scotland and is processed locally on North Uist. The seaweed is harvested by hand, in a traditional manner. Skilled Harvesters, work at low tide and lay out a circle of rope over the area of seaweed they are going to cut. Cutting inside this circle, a seaweed stem of 300mm is left to establish a quick regrowth, thus maintaining an ecological balance. When the tide returns, the cut seaweed floats. The rope is gathered and the seaweed is towed to the shore by a small boat. The seaweed is the gently dried using a unique low heat drying system that preserves the seaweed. It can be used be used in the feed on its own, or along with our SupaHoof formula for great feet.
For fussy feeders or those prone to gas, a useful product to try is Fennel. Fennel seeds support the gut and help the horse cope with any build up of gases. They can also help to maintain a healthy appetite and maintain good milk production, especially in the first days following foaling. It is traditionally used in gripewater for human babies. Horses know when they need fennel. Offer a handful and see the difference when they are feeling uncomfortable. We use the seeds for our horses, but the core of the plant is great in cooking! Get some from your local supermarket and try with sea bass or crab with a little orange and lemon and freshly made mayonnaise – that’s dinner sorted!
Whole fenugreek seeds are great for horses. Feeding them helps support muscle function and comfortable stomach working. It can be fed as whole seeds in the feed, but it is also used as the main ingredient in our MuscleUP formula. Please note that it is not advisable to use Fenugreek seeds in pregnant mares.
