Ride for Research was created by Susannah Baughan earlier this year – a sponsored ride on 20th and 21st August that welcomed riders all over the country to take part in their own areas, raising money for Cancer Research UK. The total raised was a whopping £21,700 – an incredible debut!
Here is Susie’s story:
“Ride for Research was started by myself, Susannah Baughan, with the help of Karen Lane and Alex Bowles. I wanted to organise a sponsored ride to help Karen Lane raise money for Cancer Research UK. At the time she had already raised £53,000 via various events she held.
“I can’t believe I’m saying this but for the last 5 years I have been fighting Cancer. First the bowel then the liver, then one lung and yes you’ve guest it, the other. So maybe now some of you will realise why I’m so passionate about Cancer Research. Cancer did not know it was messing with Karen Lane and this will not beat me, but others need Cancer Research to keep doing what they do best and that is to RESEARCH!!! to find a cure.”
So, I thought to myself, why restrict the sponsored ride to people in my local area? Why not open it up for others! That way, those that don’t have transport can still take part and join other equestrians across the UK raising money for Cancer Research UK, helping to find a cure for a disease which I’m sure has unfortunately affected us all in one way or another.
And there we go, Ride for Research 2016 Sponsored Ride was created! Go and take a look at our website to see the AMAZING total raised and lots of pictures too!
We decided that it was such a success, that we would make it an annual event. One month after the very first Ride, I couldn’t sit there waiting a WHOLE YEAR for our next event… so, Ride for Research Dressage League was created!”
Ride for Research is now kindly sponsored by Global Herbs Ltd, HayGrazer, and Garratt Horsebox Hire, and we look forward to working with Susie in 2017 to raise as much money as we possible can for Cancer Research UK.
We caught up with Susie at Ride for Research this week to see how they’ve been getting on… “We have had a very busy few weeks here at Ride for Research organising the Dressage League that will be taking place in February, March and April next year!
