Nodular Skin Disease

Nodular Skin Disease causes one or more sore, inflamed, weeping eyes. The weeping eye can last for a week or 10 days and come back every few weeks, months or even years. Luckily it is not a common condition.

The cause of the condition is not known but may be an allergic reaction to certain bacteria or a migrating form of worm larvae.

Treatment by your vet involves the use of anti-inflammatories and steroids with drugs like atropine to keep the pupil open so it does not get stuck during the time of greatest soreness. Usually the horse is kept in a dark environment as this encourages the pupil to keep open and reduces discomfort caused by too much sunlight. Antioxidant and immune support supplements may help with the overall severity of the condition.
