Lameness occurs when a horse ’limps’. Limping is caused by some form of pain (or mild discomfort) associated with walking or trotting. When a horse is 1/10th lame the problem is hardly noticeable. When a horse is 10/10th lame he or she is unable to put a foot to the ground because of pain.
The pain of lameness can be caused by a problem within a joint, within a tendon or ligament or perhaps in a muscle area. Sometimes it may be very difficult to find out where a horse is hurting and procedures like nerve blocks have to be used to try and desensitise areas and find out whether they are the problem areas.
