Rain scald is a skin infection mainly on
the backs of horses when left out at grass in severe wet weather conditions. It
is caused by the same bacteria that causes Mud Fever. When the bacteria
penetrates the soft wet skin on the back it causes the skin to weep and the coat
to become matted with flaky, crusty skin. Infection with other bacteria after
the initial damage can make the condition much worse.
Horses with Rain Scald should be stabled
until the skin has healed and the coat kept dry. Large scabs are removed gently
and antiseptic washes containing chlorhexidine or iodine can be used.
Antibiotics by mouth are necessary in severe cases. Supplements as for Mud Fever
can be used to assist the body’s recovery.
